I have now learned the bitter and hard way, that no good things come when you rush and just want to make quick progress...Soutache is an excellent lesson in patience, planning ahead, precision and then, more patience! ;)
At first I found it hard to control the pesky little cords and make the line up perfectly, it does take a long time to get the right rhythm, but I now find it much easier to manipulate between crystals and pearls and beads...as I continue my journey with soutache I am finding new ways to use this material and it's just so much FUN!! :)

Here is my second attempt of making a full necklace with soutache, apart from the strap part which I made from seed beads into a thin spiral. I didn't have any other colors left so I just wanted to make it work...more is on its way and then I can have more fun!! But I really love how this necklace turned out! I feel encouraged! :)

Recently I've taken up working with soutache. It is something I've always wanted to try, along with much less successful pursuits including wire wrapping for instance, which totally didn't work out on any level...lol...Soutache is a tricky discipline, one that requires a lot of patience and, *gasp*, planning ahead, which is completely against my normal way of approaching jewelry making which is more intuitive....I'm captivated by the possibilities of soutache and looking forward to exploring it future. This is my first attempt of making a necklace where I have combined the soutache with regular bead work! :)

It's been quite a while since I updated my blog. I have a lot of catching up to do!!! :)
The first thing I want to blog about is this creation which I submitted to the Bead Dreams competition of 2011. It was not accepted and I'd be lying if I said I wasn't quite disappointed...Each component was an original design especially for this competition and more than 100 hours went into creating it. But alas, with all the many gorgeous entries this years I don't envy the judges who had to decide on the finalists!
I hope I'll have the courage to try again next year but who knows? :) The important thing is not loosing the fun and amazement that comes with the actual creation of a new piece, technique or composition,- it's not about winning, it's all about having fun doing something you love!

After having gone on and one about my new flower design, which I'm really excited about, I finally have a finished product to show for it! I wanted to make something different, play with the textures and depth of the petals and came up with a technique that uses peyote as a base and some random improvisation to hold them all together. I also love the color on this, I'm especially partial to the cream and olive lately which shows in much of my current work. Also, I found those delicious yellow glass drops and knew I wanted to incorperate them somehow,- I think they are perfect in this piece! :)

I've been going through tough spot lately in terms of creativity and inspiration...I get extremely anxious and worried when that happens for too long, I always worry that I'll never get my vision back or that I'll never be able to make something truly original again. I'm quite sure this is a worry I share with most of my fellow beaders and artists in general. So it's always an uplifting experience when that spark comes back, especially after a long absence, and that's exactly what happened with this necklace.

I haven't been entering the monthly EBW challenges for a while...I love how they inspire and push you to your creative limits...but the I just haven't had the time or the ideas...this month, however, the theme was "My Secret Garden"...well, if anything should inspire someone like me, it ought to be something like that!!!!

So I sat down the day before the dead-line and made this necklace, worked for a solid 9 hours straight, no breaks and I was actually delighted with the result!! Mind you, I didn't make all the componants in one night,- it comprises lots of different flowers that I've created over time and not known how to incorporate in previous projects, but still, stitching everything together to a harmonious entity is no small task either! :)
I have to say that the creative process did put a smile back on my face..feels good to be back! Hope this means a lot of new creations soon!!! :)

This piece was supposed to go in an entirely different direction! I've been working on a new batch of Fimo roses, something I love doing off the grid since it's so relaxing and fun,- sort of like how I loved playing with clay when I was little...
I had everything laid out and wanted to find something soft and romantic to accomodate those roses (they are in shades of pink!),- however, at some point, not sure where, this project took a u-turn and became a celebration of pearls and crystals, looking quite bridal I think! I am in love with cream pearls. It does make me contemplate yet again if I should be focusing on bridal jewelry in general.

The small roses embellished under the center crystals are made of plastic I think...which would normally be considered an sheer abomination in company of Swarovski crystals and pearls...lol..but hey, if it works, why not? I love the tiny roses...they did fit better than the fimo ones I made (which I muuuuch larger). So there! :) Onwards to my next project!

Alright then! THE LAST ONE!! At least for now. I think I've played with this shape and the variations of it enough for the time being, though part of the reason why I've been going on about it is because I haven't had any other solid ideas for a while...hard to imagine, but yes, real life takes over now and then and my focus needs to be else where...
I do worry a lot about not having new ideas though. I am happiest when I have something brewing, when I feel this excitement of being able to create something that is uniquely mine..equally, I realize that it isn't always possible. I need my muse back!!!

I do love making bridal jewelry though...at one point in time I thought I might make it my main occupation but lovely as all those crystals and pearls may be, I find it hard to stay focused on one thing for long. So, onwards to new adventures!! And may those ideas dawn on me soon or else I'll get creative in the kitchen making cookies and then I'll be sorry for REAL! :D

I love making lentil flowers and sticking them on flat necklaces, I've done them in all colors and variations by now but I especially love combining them with gold wire, a jewelry making discipline I'm not fairly practiced in but absolutely adore.

This necklace is a herringbone stitch using two different sizes of beads, 6 and 8's...I tried using three sizes but it curves too much and it's hard to keep round. I also love the peridot cabochons...I bought a few a while back and enjoy using them in different designs, in fact, I love all sorts of cabochons but since bead embroidery isn't something I often indulge in, I find them hard to incorporate in general. I love how this came out though, even if I couldn't quite catch it on camera..

I do like to make all sorts of color variations on each design, just to see how it works out and it was obvious that I'd make one in Turquoise,- I think it's a beautiful color and one I love wearing myself. This design is a bit simpler than the others it terms of the strap itself, but I think it still maintains a festive flair. I think I still have one left to make,- in white....THEN I'll be done! :) Perhaps..:D:D

Here's my latest piece in the current series of waves and bugle fans,- I keep thinking it's the last I'll do because I tend to get restless and always look for something new to do, but equally, these are fairly easy and fun to make so, who knows? I might make more! I'm thinking I should at least make one that wasn't bronze/pink/purple...Turquoise perhaps?

I had a dream in the middle of the night about a new design...I could feel it and see it clearly, it was complex, beautiful and used a brand new technique that I hadn't seen before, I felt so excited having invented something that genius...but alas, I woke up and couldn't even remember what it looked like. I think the dream was inspired by a thought I had earlier in the day,- how it would be fun to design a pattern that comprised as many techniques as possible, one morphing into the other in seamless harmony...would it even be pretty? Well, those are the things you never know unless you actually try them out...so stay tuned, who knows what I might come up with!!! :)

Bead Dreams finalist 2010

When I decided I wanted to enter the Bead Dreams 2010 competition, I had absolutely no idea what I was going to make...or rather, I had a million ideas but no matter how I twisted and turned those beads, nothing interesting came of it and it certainly wasn't worthy of any kind of competition. In the end I just went with what I was most comfortable with, sculptural design, waves and curves and loads of crystals and rivoli and shiny things and of course, bronze and olive and gold..my favorite colors, minus the pink..lol..!!! It took me a week and a half to make, over 50 hours of work, a very sore neck and arm, teary eyes laboring over such intricate details, but in the end, I was quite happy with the result.

I didn't have time to make a second entry but it doesn't matter,- Jewel of Amun made it through to the Bead Dreams finals!! No matter what happens now, I feel like I've already won, just being up there with all that amazing talent!! It's a huge privilege and a humbling experience. But for now, before I go off fancying myself a beadwork superstar, I have 3 loads of laundry and dinner for the kids to keep me grounded...;)

My dear students are very supportive of my work but generally like to keep things a bit more simple in work-shops...recently they asked me to modify an earlier design to make it more "user friendly"...I suppose I have a tendency to go a bit overboard and a main issue of mine is certainly the seemingly inability to edit myself and realize when enough is enough...I have all the best of intentions but somehow, quite often I find myself going over the top with designs that are so extravagant that one might only be able to wear them for a special occasion...on the other hand, it's what I love to do, it's what I find creatively challenging and motivating so apart from creating something like this low key design every once in a while, I think I'll just stick with the glitter!!! :)

It's been a while since I last blogged...this mainly due to time constrictions and various other projects that I've poured my time and efforts into. I finally finished the Bead Dream entry for this year, and since I totally fell in love with the technique I used for that, I made this much smaller and delicate version of lavender loveliness. I find it interesting and fun to experiment with merging different techniques into a piece while keeping it coherent and current,- I guess I'm less adventurous when it comes to color choices...I sometimes wish I would venture out of my pastel comfort zone and do something truly dramatic...but then again, it's always good to have ambitions and something to strive for! :)

I don't have room to post about every piece I've made since getting back from Denmark, but I do want to include this one,- I absolutely LOVE pink but even for me this was a bit extreme! I wanted it as pink as possible, as crystal encrusted as possible and as glittery as possible! I felt sooo good when I had finished it, I just had to get it out of my system (and I might not be all done and repeat the adventure because this one sold in 24 hours flat),- MAGENTA RULES!!!!
Things like that happen when people tell me I should be more commercial and mainstream...I tend to be a spiteful little child doing the exact opposite....hehehehehehehe......;)

Of all the recent necklaces I have made, this is my personal favorite and makes me smile every time I look at it...I'm a freak for neat finishes, sometimes I spend almost more time on that than on the actual necklace but this one turned out favorable in particular. I also love the combination of silver, powder blue and champagne, not a combination I would normally go for perhaps, but I thought it worked out well in the end! I don't mind if it never sells!! :D:D

A lot has happened lately and I feel that I have badly neglected blogging in order to take care of more urgent matters...mostly health issues really, I seem to have run into some bad luck, one thing following the other,- first two rounds of the flu, then a very badly sprained foot, then the flu one more time...*sigh*....small set backs and in the grand scheme of things, watching the news around the world, I suppose I should not complain. It could be worse.

Thankfully it has not slowed down my creativity,- though I have felt a bit low on ideas, I have still managed to make a few odd new pieces that I would like to share with you all! :)

Firstly,- I ordered an obscene amount of frosted and bronze bugle beads through the bead store where I currently teach, because I thought I had lots of bright ideas of what to do with them..turned out it was a bit trickier than I thought,- there's a limit to how versatile those beads can be, but still, I did make one piece that I was quite happy with,- Crystal Cascade I called it:

Every once in a while I depart from my regular floral theme and fascination from the textures of nature to explore a more structured and symmetrical form of beading and one of my favorite designs is surely this right angle weave necklace which is three dimensional AND triple layered with three sizes of beads and though it's extremely time (and bead!) consuming, I love the end result.

I had actually made a very pretty Swarovski Rivoli center for this piece which in my outrageous mess of trays of beads and unfinished projects had somehow gotten lost. In my frustration I decided to make this alternative pendant which is a bead embroidery piece with a Chrysanthemum cabochon center and various Swarovski crystals and seed beads. Once it was done it looked much better than my initial idea. Eventually I did find the Rivoli though (it did take some extensive cleaning up first, obviously....lol) and that one will surely find its way into a completely different design. Now, back to my flowers, - a deep desire for all things red and burgundy seems to have descended upon me and I will need to make many more roses and flowers before that desire is saturated...stay tuned, it will be blooming a LOT before I'm done!! :D

This is another example of the flowers from the lovely pattern by Kim Anderson. I never seem to tire of the flower theme, or the use of Rivoli, apparently and though I think at times I ought to be a bit more diverse in my designs, I always come back to the realm of flora....
As I was feebly attempting to sort out my bead boxes last night I decided to arrange them according to color...interesting, I usually sort them according to size...turns out I had no less than a staggering 35 (!!!!) boxes of green and an equal amount of pink, red and rose....hmmm....
It's like I'm color blind when I go shopping, I don't see anything else, I just shop for the same palette over and over! LOL!! Oh well...maybe one day I'll do something crazy in...blue?! :D

Here it is finally, my entry for this month's EBW challenge! :) I initially was trying to make a life life Orchid but it rapidly turned into yet another fantasy piece with numereous of unplanned additions and fiddling...still, I'm finding it challenging in a good way to work with free-form herringbone (the leaves of the flower) and trying to sculpture them in a way that would make sense in a more cohesive artistic way. In any event, I'm glad to have finished it on time and looking forward to going ahead with new planned endeavors already in the brew..;)

Here's the latest addition to my Moonlight series, which I'm incredibly fond of due to the complicated yet balanced design (if I do say so myself...lol, it's not often my designs actually work!!),- I'll probably keep making them since they sell so well, but I've been busy with other things, challenge pieces (pictures coming soon!), custom orders and of course,- my ailing hand/arm.

I've found it completely depressing and deflating to be dictated by a physical temporary handicap, but the shooting pain I get from simply holding my bead work has seriously slowed me down and made me ponder... I love my work, I never work less than 10-15 hours a day and the thought that I can't continue at that crazy pace is really scary to me. However, having said that...I'm learning to pace my self and have the greatest respect for more experienced beaders warnings...if they tell me to slow down or else, I better listen up! ;)

What started out as a perfectly innocent looking little flower, quickly became a rather big center piece that needed to get attached to a necklace of some kind....I love how these pieces seem to take on a life of their own, no planning in advance...I often wonder if I should try a different approach, like writing and drawing my designs first and then try to bead them but it seems more fun to me to let the jewelry decide which way it wants to go...:)

The "Big Reveal" on the fabulously fun "Use the Muse contest" was finally made public today and it was such an amazing privilege to see all the fabulous entries and the diversity of the designs. I had such a great time creating this piece, Morai's Charm!! Initially, upon receiving the kit with the beads and the muse, I was puzzled and had not the faintest idea what to do with it. Especially not the muse, this beautiful shell center piece, which really just looked great on its own. It was just laying around for a few weeks before I even attempted to work on it but once I got the general idea, I completed it in less than two days and I reaaaaaaally loved the result!!
It was a total honor to see that this piece won "Design of Destinction" of the contest and I'll definitely consider entering again,- nothing is more fun that pushing the boundaries and discover new and exciting things to do with all those little shiny beady things!!

Summer vacation is in full blow and much of my time is spent with the kids and generally trying to not die in the heat. Hate the heat. Being born and raised in Denmark, I miss the rain and the cool breeze...

Nothing is more exciting than to come up with a grand new design, trying it out, taking it apart and putting it back together again, until I reach a result I'm happy with! This design is absolutely delightful because it combines my favorite things,- my ever beloved Swarovski chatons that I seem to have an unexplained affection for and the romatic vintage look, that I also seem to favor very often. I absolutely love how this came out and now, in a beading frenzy not uncommon to me, I am making similar necklaces in this line I have named "Celestia" on account of their stary quality. More colors will be posted here!! :)

One of the best thing about beading is discovering new techniques and develop new designs and this piece shows a little experiment I did with polymer clay roses incorporated in a beaded necklace. I have never done anything in polymer clay before but thought it would be interesting to create something to be used with beads and I came up with these roses,- looking quite life-like I think!! :D
It was a bit of a headache to figure out how to actually attach them and make the piece look cohesive, but I think I managed to get quite a nice result for my first try! I'm already plotting making something new, perhaps a bridal piece with cream colored roses, who knows? As always, anything could happen, it's all about exploring and never being afraid of experimenting...often times it's utter rubbish,- but every once in a while, you may just come up with something extraordinary! Happy beading! :)

I was absolutely stoked to find out that this necklace won the EBW challenge of April, Red Carpet, theme. With all the amazing entries it sure was an honor to win and I appreciate all the votes and kind feed back!! Personally I love this piece, the process of making it was a lot of fun, very creative and it was redone so many times I can't even remember what the original design looked like. But that's exactly what I love about these challenges,- it makes you think, push your boundaries, experiment and explore. I never used bugle beads before but I loved how this piece came out....One of a kind though, can't image I'd make more than one of these!!! :D

Apart from playing with swarovski chatons, I also love making flowers. Any kind, but especially roses...they fascinate me no end and I love to make necklaces that allow me to make a whole lot of different components and stitch them together in the end to create something cohesive and complete. My rose necklaces are like that, full of many different layers, texture, individually hand stitched flowers and leaves, and the best part is when it all comes together.
I'm waiting for divine inspiration to figure out where I might go next...it would be fun and interesting to push my usual boundaries a little but we'll see....:)

I'm absolutely loving exploring the new and exciting possibilities of bead embroidery. It wasn't always an area I found inviting, due to being so time consuming and complex , but I have to say that once I got going, it was hard to stop. Lately I've been on a roll and made a lot of different things, it's very different from what I usually make and it's been a welcome change from the regular flowers and floral motifs I favor so much! Despite being miserable about my missing cat, I still managed to finish this piece just in time for the monthly EBW challenge deadline...I guess I would be more excited about it if I wasn't too distressed and missing my little furry baby....*sigh*

I have finally finished this bead embroidery piece which took much longer than I thought it would! But now that it's done, I'm quite happy with the result. Also,- I seem to be gluing everything down now for embroidery, beads, buttons, random items from around the house....hmm...it's so addictive!!!! :D

I finally completed this necklace which I thought turned out quite well. I love the colors and the simplicity of it (well, I suppose you'll have to look at my other works to appreciate how this can be considered "simple"..lol). Every flower was handstitched and sewn on the necklace after everything else was done. I wish I could make more of these but alas, the world seems to have run out of 10 mm lentil beads with a front to back top drill....:D
